Marcel Regueiro b. 1995, Mallorca, Spain.
Through the use of symmetry, elongation, and irregular surfaces, I carve abstract stone sculptures and
functional objects that have highly defined components. Biomorphic forms suggesting geological
features, exotic vegetation, cosmic events, or even the taste of honey. Themes of sexuality and
cosmology are recurrent dialogues within my work.
My interest in geology, vegetation, and the human psyche has led me to travel through many different
"ecosystems". I am interested in how the human mind’s perception reacts towards the experience of
inhabiting a landscape, how this leads to the creation of memories, and the emotional trace they
leave behind. Paying attention to this process of perception allows me to re-imagine the landscape
and translate it into physical objects. It is important for me to to stablish a dialogue with my work that
is guided by the intuitive response towards a selected material and the environment that surrounds it.
In every sculpture, I am encapsulating a distorted memory of an ecosystem I have experienced or
vegetation from a different reality I haven’t seen yet. I look to question the nature of form and
material to find a language that circumnavigates the life of objects. That usually translates to
ascending forms that resemble fictional vegetation, defined by symmetry at its core and driven by the
symbolism of mutability and growth.
Marcel currently lives and works in Benson, Vermont.
